1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) when you visit it. They allow the site to remember your actions, preferences, and login state over time, so you don't have to re-enter information every time you return or navigate between pages.
Cookies can be:
- Session cookies: Temporary cookies that expire when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies: Remain on your device for a set duration (days, months, or years) until they expire or you manually delete them.
- First-party cookies: Set directly by the website you are visiting (in this case, AnyTransfer).
- Third-party cookies: Set by other organizations whose services are embedded on the page (e.g., embedded video players, chat widgets, or analytics tools).
2. Categories of Cookies We Use
AnyTransfer only uses cookies that are strictly necessary for the core functionality of the Service, plus a small number of preference-cookies. As of the date of this policy, we do not use advertising cookies, marketing trackers, or third-party analytics cookies.
| Category | Purpose | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly Necessary | Essential for logging in, maintaining sessions, CSRF protection, and security features. Cannot be switched off. | Yes |
| Preference / Functionality | Remember settings such as light / dark theme choice, language, and onboarding dismissal state. | No |
| Analytics / Performance | Understand how visitors use the site to improve performance and features. Not currently enabled by default on our self-hosted installation. | No |
| Marketing / Advertising | Track visits across sites to show personalized ads. We do not use this category of cookies. | — |
3. Complete Cookie List
The following table lists the specific cookies AnyTransfer currently sets:
| Cookie Name | Type / Source | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
PHPSESSID |
First-party, session | Session | Maintains your authenticated session state between HTTP requests so you don't have to log in on every page navigation. Also used for CSRF token coordination during form submissions. |
anytransfer_remember |
First-party, persistent (set only if "Remember me" is checked) | 30 days | Secure cookie containing a signed random token that allows passwordless re-authentication across browser sessions. Uses HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax flags. |
anytransfer_theme (localStorage) |
First-party, preference (stored client-side, not an HTTP cookie) | Until cleared or device reset | Remembers whether you selected "light" or "dark" visual theme so it persists across page visits. |
anytransfer_csrf (localStorage) |
First-party, security (stored client-side) | Session | Synchronizes the anti-CSRF token between JavaScript API calls and server-side validation. |
Note: If you log in using a third-party provider (for example "Sign in with Google"), that provider may also set its own cookies according to its own privacy policy. We do not control those third-party cookies.
4. Third-Party Cookies
By default, the AnyTransfer self-hosted instance does not load third-party analytics, advertising networks, or social-media share widgets that would set third-party cookies on our pages. Exceptions:
- OAuth login buttons (e.g., Google) — when clicked, these redirect you to the provider's own domain where their cookies and policies apply.
- Embedded content — if a user shares a file that contains embedded external links (for example a PDF linking to YouTube), those external sites may set cookies when you visit them. This is outside AnyTransfer's control.
5. Local Storage & Similar Technologies
In addition to traditional HTTP cookies, we use browser localStorage and (very occasionally) sessionStorage to store small client-side-only pieces of data such as your theme preference and CSRF token. Unlike cookies, these values are never automatically sent to the server in HTTP request headers; they are only accessed by JavaScript running on the page when the browser decides to run that script.
You can clear all AnyTransfer client-side storage from your browser's developer tools (Application / Storage tab) or by using the "Clear site data" option in your browser settings.
6. How to Control Cookies
You have several ways to control, disable, or delete cookies:
- Browser settings: Every modern browser lets you block, delete, or restrict cookies. Search for "cookies" in your browser's settings or help center for exact steps for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or Brave.
- Private / Incognito mode: Browsing in Private or Incognito windows prevents most persistent cookies from being stored after you close the window. Session cookies still work during that browsing session.
- Opting out of theme storage: If you don't want AnyTransfer to remember your light/dark theme preference, simply do not toggle the theme switch — or manually delete the
anytransfer_themekey from your browser's localStorage. - Effect of disabling cookies: Blocking strictly-necessary cookies will prevent you from logging in, submitting forms, uploading files, or using authenticated features. Unregistered, read-only browsing of the home page will still work but may feel limited.
